It carries the main emphasis in the line, and the adjunct has been pushed into much greater prominence than either the subject which is the relatively innocuous that or the predicator leads. Even the object men is so general that it lacks much force and impact. The adjunct can be an important part, perhaps the most important part, of a sentence, but its weight must be balanced against the other elements. Adjuncts can form part of the balance within a sentence or its groups, as applies in Sonnet 129 in which lines 5-8 have a succession of adjuncts which contrast with one another: Inioyd no sooner but dispised straight, Past reason hunted, and no sooner had Group Structure: The Other Groups 49 Past reason hated as a swollowed bayt, On purpose layd to make the taker mad.
Although this is so, the way in which this final part is arranged makes it have links with what has gone before. The opening part and no sooner had echoes and contrasts with the phrase Inioyd no sooner in the previous line. It also is made up of an adjunct and a past participle and this order echoes the order of the first half of the line Past reason hunted as well as that of the following line Past reason hated. But the no sooner had is not itself an independent phrase set in contrast with Past reason hunted, since as a whole it forms an adjunct to the head of the following line.
Group Structu re: The Noun Group 23 consists of a single word, the head may be a pronou n such as he or she. In the group given as an example in the last paragraph there are words both before and after the head, but these words fall into different patterns. As a general rule the words before the head are single ones, which are independent of one another; whereas those after the head form phrases or small units which hang together. The unit in the wheel-chair forms a set of interdependent words which must be treated as a whole.
