Livable Netherlands was the national extension of a movement that had begun in a number of municipalities at previous local elections. In 2002 it hoped to make a strong entry into Parliament. In October the party leadership advised the party congress to choose Pim Fortuyn as the party leader. Polls at the beginning of November indicated that LN might expect to receive 6 to 8 seats at the upcoming 24 BRITISH ELECTIONS & PARTIES REVIEW elections.
The question that seems more directly related to possible support for the LPF, whether to allow more asylum-seekers or send as many as possible back, shows an even smaller rise from 42% to 49% on the more anti-immigrant side of the scale. So, in none of the issues included in the DPES can there be said to be a clear surge to the right. Granted, the shifts that have occurred are possibly strongest in terms of personal safety and anti-immigrant issues, but they are not so great as to indicate that it was a major change in the electoral market that accounted for the dramatic election results of 15 May 2002.
2 In terms of left-right self-placement and on the stands taken on various important political issues, shifts in opinion are moderate, if there are any significant shifts at all. The electorate had not become hugely more cynical or less efficacious. Nor did the voters view governmental performance in the area of the economy unfavourably, although there was some rise in general dissatisfaction with the government. However, the fact that the election results cannot be accounted for on the basis of shifts in attitudes and opinions of the electorate by no means implies that there is no relationship between these opinions and the vote cast.
