There are three major reasons for this neglect. First, as the concern with embodiment often remained implicit within the Chicago studies, it was possible for subsequent generations of sociological commentators to underplay and even ignore its significance.
Finally, Thomas even suggested that the existence of chronic crises provide the foundations for specialist occupations – such as those in medicine, law and government – dedicated to dealing with disturbances in the physical and social environment.
