A particularly interesting example of teacher-provided support was shown to us by Nancy Johnson, a teacher who taught "Rescue at Boone's Meadow" to first graders. She did not expect these students to deal with the entire problem. Nevertheless, by handing out a map and manipulatives that represented a standard for distance, Johnson was able to help the students figure out the time and distance to rescue the eagle given a particular route.
