The process begins with a questionnaire to obtain information about the social networks of the client, their preferences for conversational topics and an idea of their premorbid communicative style, and an interview to determine the client's communicative needs. The client is then evaluated in the real-life situations that are important to them. The evaluation situation is then rated and the scores are entered on a profile form which provides a graphic representation of the client's abilities. This evaluation will help determine areas to concentrate on in therapy.

This definition of functional communication is a little different from the approach taken in assessments of functional communication such as the Functional Communication Profile (Sarno, 1965), the Communicative Abilities in Daily Living (Holland, 1980), the Communicative Effectiveness Index (Lomas et al, 1989) or the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Functional Assessment of Communication Skills (Frattali et al, 1995). The focus of the assessment component in this planner is still communicative disability, but its emphasis is more on the unique communicative environment of the individual.

Profiling scores The results of the evaluation of the client's communication goals in their real-life or simulated situations can be profiled to give the clinician and the client a clear summary of their abilities and the areas that need attention for that goal to be met. Appendix D provides a Profile of Functional Communication Skills. On this form the clinician sets out the overall communication goal and the specific activities that form that goal. The ratings from the Multidimensional Rating Scale are then plotted.
