The bottom line is that I believe it is foolish for a company to tie a large part of an individual’s compensation to a bonus that could provide motivation to sacrifice the long-term health of that company for personal gain.
The first week was comprised of a number of 2- to 4-hour sessions taught by practicing Industrial Engineers, who taught critical tools, concepts, and skills necessary to be effective in the various tasks required of all IEs. The second week of training was conducted in the Methods Lab; and, during the week, an actual detailed production plan was developed for a small wiring harness. I cannot over emphasize the importance of preplanning to Packard, which I will discuss in detail in Chapter 7. Having all of the training conducted by practicing Industrial Engineers helped the new engineer-in-training develop bonds with his/her new workmates very quickly; and it was a great tool for helping the older e ngineers stay current with their skills and hone their training capabilities (IEs conducted a lot of training within Packard, much of it involving hourly workers).
I was then taken on a more detailed tour of the manufacturing facilities on both sides of town. S. Manufacturing On the side of town adjacent to the Engineering Building was the cablemaking operation and all of the wiring harness manufacturing facilities. I was even more impressed than I had been during my abbreviated tour during the interview process. The plants were relatively new, well laid out and organized, and the housekeeping was quite good. It also was very noticeable that all of the employees seemed to be busy doing c onstructive things, and there were no gangs of workers milling around.
