A word of clarification may be in order concerning the eight ideologies selected for consideration in this book. Nationalism hardly needs Page xv justification: it has been the single most explosive ideology of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it promises to remain so in the twenty-first century. Everywhere around the globe people are struggling on behalf of their identity, their ethnicity, their race, their tribe, their nationality.
In other words, one acquires certain ideas from each philosopher, not a total, ideal answer. More particularly, by no means can one argue that Marx has been a failure as a philosopher, for no society along Marx's vision has ever been established. Marx says very little about the ideal future society because, consistent with Marxist epistemology (stressing the unity of knowing and doing), he has no experience of such a society. So, in all of his writings (some fifty volumes by the latest count), only in a few places and only in very general terms does he speak of the ideal society in terms of the end of private property, the end of exploitation and alienation, the emergence of producers' and consumers' cooperatives, and the like.
