The second draft of my novels is when I’ve told the story and got to the end, and now I can polish and fine tune, sculpt, tweak and fiddle. I’m free of the pressure to keep the narrative moving along. Oddly enough, it is the stage at which I feel I’m really giving full rein to my craft, and it’s actually the most satisfying part of the process. Working with a sympathetic editor who’s in tune with the story and characters is more satisfying still. When you’ve written, say, 80,000 words, no matter how punctilious you are, the law of averages is against you and some of them are going to be wrong.
It grabbed my attention the first time I heard it and I keep enjoying it. My first thought was that it was a poem by Roger McGough. Later I discovered that it was actually written by copywriters at the ad agency Leo Burnett, who had based it on the lyrics of a song by Rolf Harris. Strange but true. In part it goes…. the Gothy types and scoffy types and like-their-coffee-frothy types were just passing by I remember, I remember The house where I was born. I’ve enjoyed using poetic techniques when writing for businesses.
