It is a result of structural developments and processes that have occurred – and still do – in society. A characteristic of social problems is that they say something about that society’s social structure and opportunities for everybody (Mills, 1951).
Instrumental functionality relates to activities that produce a practical result, like helping around the house or running errands (practical support). Social functionality relates to manners and joint activities between people who are not instrumental but can give someone a feeling of integration, involvement and acceptance (emotional support and companionship support).
