Example text

A side-effect of this move to verbal processes in the description of the events is that Tracey herself is increasingly portrayed not as a victim ( the goal) of a process but as a key protagonist: as sayer, she i s more frequently the 'agent' of the events reported, rather than someone suffering them. In fact, the 20th December headline refers to Tracey a s a 'victi m' , but in i nverted commas, showing a move in sympathy from Tracey as victim of a third party to Lee as her victim. Tracey, however, is still a victim i n one respect: i n processes relating to the police and the law reported in the 20th December a rticle, such as being cha rged and a rrested.

For example, in the headline ' Fiend rapes woman in Big Mac bar' ( Clark's own example, reproduced from the Sun newspaper of 27th November 1 9 8 6 ) , the actor, the 'fiend', is placed first in an active clause, the process is 'rapes', the goal is 'woman', and the circumstance is the place in which it occurred. However, in Clark's example from the following month's Sun coverage of a different violent attack, the headline ' Girl 7 murdered while mum drank at pub' does not name the attacker explicitly.

Verbal Processes: Processes of saying. Examples: I said it's noisy in here; john said ' I 'm hungry '; John said that he was hungry. Material Processes: We might expect all of the above kinds of processes to occur in news report i ng. For example, in the News in Brief story discussed earlier in the chapter, we find material, verbal, behavioural, and mental processes, as follows: Tracey Andrews, fiancee of the road rage victim Lee Harvey, has been taken to hospital after a suspected overdose. Mr Harvey, aged 25, was knifed to death in a sa vage attack after he and Tracey were pursued by another car i n a 'cat and mouse' chase near Alvechurch, Worcestershire.
