As they worried, they were able to keep up appearances: they still wore nice clothes, went to the opera weekly, and kept their Philadelphia mansion looking fine. But they failed to notice that their own lives were falling apart around them. Mr. Church’s railroad business verged on bankruptcy, most of their household servants had quit, and their mansion was dilapidating from the inside out. They kept up the extravagant landscaping but failed to notice that weeds had invaded their plant beds. They had the mansion painted but ignored the fact that termites infested the foundation.
The church that doesn’t challenge its members to face the core ethical issues that confront them every day at work is the church that has abdicated its responsibility. Many churches, particularly evangelical ones, make this mistake, and here’s why: too many evangelical churches have emphasized the vertical, just-me-and-Jesus relationship to the exclusion of the horizontal relationships with other human beings and with all of creation. 13 In other words, the formula for evangelical growth—namely, individual conversion—also precludes many evangelical churches from affecting the very changes that rally its members.
