Since the vast majority of information about presidential elections received by ordinary citizens is mediated information, television news reports play an important linkage role in our electoral process—arguably more important than even the political parties themselves (cf. Patterson 1994; Wayne 2001, 2003). While the audience for network television news is far smaller than it was a generation ago, large numbers of voters continue to tune in to these evening newscasts or examine their cable and online offshoots.
Fox News provided considerable positive coverage of George W. Bush’s first term (Farnsworth and Lichter 2006a) and by 2004 was at least as important to cable news viewers as the more established CNN (Pew 2004c). The Internet became an obsession for millions of Americans and the source of constantly available news and information—sometimes of dubious quality—about virtually any topic (Davis and Owen 1998; Drudge 2000; Hall 2001; Seib 2001). And what about the once-dominant Big Three television networks?
