Dates of the selections are provided in pa­ rentheses after the titles.

His decision was in theory the result of a long process of study and contemplation that took into account the lessons learned during the revivals. In practice, it was also fueled by a failed relationship. Shep­ herding hundreds of souls, and seeing many fall away after supposed conversions and admission to the church, led Edwards to the conclusion that the requirements for entering the church needed to be stricter.
