" Editing the Texts The text of Edwards' sermons is reproduced here as originally written in manuscript, without later emendations; or, if Edwards published a ser mon himself, as it was printed in the first edition; or as it appears in the earliest posthumous edition. Dates of the selections are provided in pa rentheses after the titles.
His decision was in theory the result of a long process of study and contemplation that took into account the lessons learned during the revivals. In practice, it was also fueled by a failed relationship. Shep herding hundreds of souls, and seeing many fall away after supposed conversions and admission to the church, led Edwards to the conclusion that the requirements for entering the church needed to be stricter. " The townspeople, as well as his opponents in surrounding towns, interpreted his change of position to mean that he required proof of conversion and that he, as minister, was the only person qualified to judge.
In order to present this text to modern readers, several technical adjustments have been made, including the regularization of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
