How sad, in light of all this, to see modern productions of Richard III which, heedlessly or ignorantly, cut her out, thus cheating us of that final confrontation of male and female as "hog" and "hag"—for so Shakespeare calls the humpbacked King and the aged Queen at last.
But there is in him, too, despite what allegiance he may have felt he owed the old Roman faith of his mother, a Protestant, Puritan, Hebraic, finally patriarchal distrust of Mariolatry in all its forms, any attempt to smuggle into Christianity or patriotic piety homage to the Goddess.
