The views held of Cromwell by his contemporaries were no less irreconcilable. As early as 1647, his former friend John Lilburne was accusing him of a betrayal of his pledge to campaign for civil liberties; his private attempt to draw up an agreement with the king suggested an exclusive interest in advancing his own ambition (see Gregg 1986:191).
This alone would enable the afflicted Protestants to see beyond the particular features of their wretchedness and afford them an insight into the ultimate realities of their existence. Because of the centrality of the Scriptures in d’Aubigné’s interpretation of experience, his psalm meditations are written in a very restrained way. In comparison with Sponde or de Bèze, who made a highly personal use of the freedom permissible in this genre, d’Aubigné relies almost exclusively on Biblical text for an expression of the positive assertions he wishes to make.
Sharing Calvin’s view that God made himself known through history, d’Aubigné was convinced that a faithful, unadulterated account of events must inevitably reveal the judgement of God and condemn the folly of man.
